What is a Hydrosol?

Also known as flower and herb waters, or hydrolats, hydrosols contain water-based plant components-- including anti-oxidants, terpenes, and even vitamins!-- as well as small amounts of emulsified, steam-derived essential oils.

What are hydrosols good for?

Hydrosols can be used in much the same way as essential oils, while boasting more beneficial properties from the water-soluble components, which essential oils do not have. They are excellent for natural skin and hair care, as well as cleaning and other home care, such as laundry and aromatherapy. Hydrosols typically do not need to be diluted before use and are gentler than commercial essential oils which often contain chemical solvents. In fact, most hydrosols are so gentle they can be more widely used with sensitive populations such as pets, children, and even pregnant people.

How are hydrosols made?

Hydrosols are produced via steam-distillation, using only heat and purified water to extract essences from aromatic plants, such as flowers, herbs, and spices. Because they are steam-distilled, hydrosols do not contain any of the harsh solvents or chemicals typically found in commercial essential oils. While we love the beauty and tradition of copper stills, it is important to note that we use only food-grade, stainless steel stills to produce our hydrosols; this ensures our hydrosols do not contain copper or other metals for those who may be sensitive.
